About

XY explores the honor and unbearable burden of cultural tradition. They are curious about the historical/mythological relationship between the body and the earth. Their practice bridges past and present through the construction of personal mythology, locating their contemporary experiences within a wider dictionary of symbols and imagery. Drawing from classic texts, Buddhist/Taoist mythology, contemporary philosophy, and auspicious signs, XY constructs chimeras, of culture and of bodies. They stitch porcelain faces to animals, to the sky, to the sea, and embellish the bodies with talismans of good fortune. These materials come together as documents of the current cultural moment, hoping to preserve and immortalize their hopes for the future.

Our most ancient relics of civilizations past are cave paintings and ceramics. Ceramics, which is both an enduring and fragile material, embodies the duality of heritage. The creation of a material that may endure millennia requires the sacrifice of body, energy, and labor. XY’s practice centers on craft, and the relationships between the earth and the body, between body and labor, sacrifice and creation, heritage and burden. Inspired by mythological symbolism and the tradition of Chinese landscape paintings, XY's porcelain babies become land and sea.
